The GAA connection
In 2006 the Flaherty Group commenced construction of their new oil depot in Birr. This coincided with Birr GAA joining forces with the Ferbane Belmont club to form an under 21 Football team. Known as Wheery this team has performed remarkably well since its inception, with players of the calibre of county dual star Sean Ryan, his brother Donal, Michael Verney and the Lonergan brothers Brian, Shane and Stephen combining brilliantly with the much talented panel of footballers from Ferbane/Belmont.
In 2007 Flahertys opened the gates of this state of the art computerised depot at Woodlands Birr discounting petrol and diesels to the public and supplying heating oils to the people of Birr and surrounding areas with an efficiency not seen before in this midlands town.
Birr Oil Company's success has coincided with this Wheery team progressing to the County Final.
